Spay-Mania!

Brenda_trimming_nails_email
Spay-Mania is a community outreach program designed for animals living in low income households located West Greenville, SC. Animal reproduction rates and homeless animal populations in these areas tend to be higher than Greenville County averages. 9 years ago Spay-Mania began as a temporary outreach and education program, we quickly realized the need was great and required more than a one time or temporary program. It became clear there were several factors contributing to animal overpopulation, abuse and homelessness in the area:

1) Poverty. Lack financial means to pay for spay/neuter.
2) Education. Lack knowledge of spay/neuter benefits for their animal, or may believe myths such as "1 litter of puppies" is good for a dog.
3) Transportation. Lack ability to transport animal to and from veterinarian appointment.
4) Veterinary Service. Lack relationship with a local Veterinarian or Veterinarian Clinic.

Speak For Animals set out to create a lasting program to improve the lives of animals in these neighborhoods assist the individuals and families to care and feed for the animals.

9 years later, through volunteer dedication, veterinary partnerships and ongoing individual and corporate donations, Spay-Mania is a monthly program that has saved or improved the quality of life for more than 10,000 animals and prevented the conception and birth of millions of future cats and dogs.

Spay-Mania Overview:

Vaccinations, Nail Clippings:
Launched in late 2010, Foothills Veterinary Hospital joins us onsite most months and offers low-cost vaccinations and free animal nail clipping. This provides tremendous health benefits to animals in the neighborhoods and fosters ongoing networking and relationships with area residents for Speak for Animals.l

Other Services:
In addition to no-cost spay/neuter, we provide needy animals with food, treats, leashes, collars, and other necessities. Humane educational materials are provided to children and adults in the form of books, DVDs and other materials. These materials teach proper animal care and offer suggestions of ways to have fun with and interact with their animals.

Speak For Animals is now well known in these economically challenged neighborhoods. Once untrusting, many residents now act as Spay/Neuter advocates to their peers. In addition, many instances of animal abuse and abandonment have been corrected through Speak For Animals outreach in the community.

As a Volunteer, Spay-Mania offers a wonderful opportunity to see first-hand the impact your time and talents make in the lives of animals and the humans who love them. Please be sure to visit our photo galleries to see Speak For Animals "Spay-Mania Alumni" and Volunteers in action.

Spay Mania Success Story

Miss Cleo

Cleo_with_mange_0_00_13-30

Cleo, a gentle 1-year old lab mix, came to us with a severe case of mange. She had already been spayed and vaccinated through our Spay-Mania program months earlier.

Her owner, John, experiencing medical issues of his own, was out of work and could not afford to continue the treatments provided by his veterinarian for her condition. John came to us seeking help and advice on treating Cleo. It was painful for us to look at Cleo in the shape she was in, yet all along her tail was wagging and she was clearly smiling through her discomfort.

A decision was made to extend medical services to Cleo immediately. She was examined and treated by Dr. Joy Culbertson at Foothills Veterinary Hospital. A special plea was sent out to our donor for financial assistance with the medical bills. In a matter of weeks, we received the donations required for Cleo's medical care. In addition to mange treatment, Cleo was required to have entropion surgery to correct her eyes. Cleo and John have come back numerous times to thank and visit with the volunteers who helped improve both of their lives.

Without the outpouring of support from our generous individual and corporate donors, animals like Cleo can experience a life of suffering, not because their owners don't care, but can't afford to, or have the knowledge to seek medical care.
